"Tell me about yourself": two examples
Almost every interview starts here. Speak for about one minute, in this order: name, education, experience, strengths, why this job. Practise it aloud until it sounds natural, not memorised.
Fresher: "Good morning. My name is Priya. I completed my B.Com from Mumbai University this year. During college I volunteered at our annual festival, where I handled visitor queries and solved problems on the spot, and I enjoyed it a lot. I speak English, Hindi and Marathi. I am patient and I learn quickly, so I would like to start my career in customer service and grow into a team leader role."
Experienced: "Good morning. I am Rahul. I have two years of experience in an inbound voice process for a telecom company, handling billing and plan queries. I regularly met my quality and call-handling targets, and I was rated among the top performers in my team twice. I am now looking for an international process where I can use my English and grow towards a quality analyst role."
Top 15 BPO interview questions, with sample answers
Use the sample answers as a guide and put them in your own words, with examples from your own life.
Tell me about yourself.
Keep it to about one minute: your name, education, experience (or that you are a fresher), one or two strengths, and why you want this job. See the two examples above.
Why do you want to work in a BPO or customer service?
"I enjoy talking to people and solving their problems. Customer service will improve my communication skills, and I like that the work is measured, so I can see myself improving every month."
Why should we hire you?
"I am patient, I listen carefully and I learn quickly. In college I [give one real example, such as helping at an event or tutoring]. I am ready to work the shifts you need and I want to grow with the company."
Are you comfortable with night shifts or rotational shifts?
Answer honestly. If yes: "Yes, I am comfortable and my family supports it." If you can only do day shifts, say so politely; there are day-shift jobs too, and an honest answer avoids problems later.
How would you handle an angry customer?
"I would stay calm and let the customer explain fully. I would apologise for the trouble, repeat the problem to show I understood it, explain what I can do and by when, and make sure the customer is satisfied before closing the call."
What will you do if you don't know the answer to a customer's question?
"I would never guess. I would politely ask the customer to hold, check with my team leader or the knowledge base, and come back with the correct answer."
What are your strengths?
Choose two that matter in customer service, such as patience, clear communication, quick learning or teamwork, and give a short real example for one of them.
What is your weakness?
Pick a real but small one and show what you are doing about it: "I used to speak too fast when I was nervous. I now practise slowing down and pausing, and it has helped a lot."
Where do you see yourself in 2–3 years?
"I want to become an expert in my process and move up to a quality or team leader role." This shows you plan to stay and grow.
Why did you leave your last job? (experienced)
Stay positive and short. "I learnt a lot there, and now I am looking for better growth and a role closer to home." Never speak badly about a previous employer.
What do you know about this company or process?
Your Jobroots recruiter will tell you what the process is (for example, customer support for a telecom company). Mention it, and why it interests you.
What are your salary expectations?
Give a range based on the job details your recruiter shared: "As a fresher, I am expecting around the offered range. Learning and growth matter most to me right now." Ask about in-hand pay and incentives at the offer stage.
Can you join immediately?
Give a clear date. If you are working, mention your notice period: "I can join within 15 days after serving my notice."
Sell me this pen. (sales and telecalling)
Ask a question before you sell: "What do you mostly use a pen for?" Then link one feature to that need ("It writes smoothly, so your notes stay clear in long meetings"), and close with a simple ask: "Shall I give you two?"
Do you have any questions for us?
Always ask one or two: "What does a typical day look like in this role?" or "How is performance measured in the first three months?"
How to do well in the voice and English round
- Speak slowly and clearly. You don't need a foreign accent; clear and confident is what counts.
- Listen fully before you answer. If you didn't understand, say: "Sorry, could you please repeat that?"
- Use polite phrases: "May I place your call on hold?", "Thank you for your patience", "I'll be happy to help."
- Computer-based English tests often ask you to repeat sentences, read aloud and answer short questions. Use a quiet place and a good headset if it's online.
- Chat and email roles include a typing test and a written reply. Use the typing test above daily; 25+ words per minute with 90% accuracy is a good target to start.
- Practise daily: read a news article aloud for 5 minutes, and describe your day in English.
