CTC, PF, ESI and professional tax explained
What is the difference between CTC and in-hand salary?
CTC (cost to company) is everything the company spends on you in a year: your gross salary plus the employer's PF and ESI contributions, and often gratuity. In-hand salary is what reaches your bank account each month after your own PF, ESI and professional tax are deducted.
Why is my PF deducted?
Provident Fund is your savings, not a fee. 12% of your basic pay is deducted, and your employer adds the same again. You can withdraw it later under the PF rules, and it earns interest.
When is ESI deducted?
Only when your gross salary is up to ₹21,000 a month. You pay 0.75% and your employer pays 3.25%, and in return you and your family get medical cover through ESIC hospitals and dispensaries.
What is professional tax?
A small state tax in Maharashtra: ₹200 a month (₹300 in February) above the salary limits. Women earning up to ₹25,000 a month pay none, and men pay less or nothing below ₹10,000.
Will I pay income tax?
Under the new tax regime, salaried people pay no income tax if their yearly taxable income is up to ₹12 lakh, after a ₹75,000 standard deduction. Most entry-level BPO salaries are well below this.
