How to spot a fake job offer

Warning signs of job scams in India and what to do if someone asks you to pay for a job.

Fake job offers are common, and they often use the names of real companies and consultancies. The most important rule: a genuine employer or recruiter does not ask you for money to get a job. Jobroots never charges candidates.

Warning signs

  • You are asked to pay for registration, an interview, training, a uniform, a laptop or an offer letter.
  • You get an offer without any interview, or after a very short chat.
  • The salary is far higher than normal for the role.
  • Messages come only from a personal number or email, and the person avoids video calls or office visits.
  • You are pressured to decide or pay "today".
  • You are asked for your bank OTP, card details or UPI PIN.

What to do

  • Do not pay and do not share OTPs or PINs.
  • Check with the company or consultancy using the phone number on their official website.
  • Report cyber fraud at cybercrime.gov.in or call the national helpline 1930.
  • If someone uses the name Jobroots, tell us on +91 79770 21911 or on WhatsApp.
